The building of the Smetana Hall began in 1903, but the idea dates back to the beginning of the 1890's. Until that time amateur thespians had performed at the Black Eagle Inn, and from the 1860's at the Karlov summerhouse (with occasional performances at the castle theatre). However, neither of these buildings had been sufficient for their needs for many years, and there was a need for a place where professional theatre companies could perform. The amateur actors therefore set up a society, whose task was to organise the arrangements for the building of a theatre.
After disagreements over the siting of the building (plans were drawn up for the construction of the hall on a site on today's Komenského namesti/Komenský Square, the Karlov summerhouse was purchased, and it was decided that the theatre would be built in its place. In the tender for the design of the Smetana Hall the winners were J. Sula, V. Sulc and J. Velfik. The head builder was J. Kreml from Litomysl, and the foundation stone was laid on 4th April 1903.
The Smetana Hall was officially opened on 11th June 1905 in the presence of F. A. Subrt, A. Jirasek and others; on the program was Smetana's Dalibor, performed by local artistes - the only professional among them played the title role. The first drama to be performed was Jirasek's M. D. Rettigova with Hana Kvapilova in the title role.
The Smetana Hall is a masterpiece of neo-renaissance architecture with art nouveau elements. The exterior decoration was carried out by A. Popp and O. Walter. This magnificent exterior is reflected by the rich interior décor - the auditorium and other areas were decorated by Rudolf Hamersmid and A. Kulhanek; the curtain was painted by F. Urban.
From 1995-2000 the reconstruction of the Smetana Hall took place, and was finished off with the re-opening of the Karlov restaurant on the ground floor. Today, as well as theatre performances and concerts, all kinds of other cultural and social events take place - especially balls, dance classes and similar events.
